If a cable says in-wall; do I have to use the cable in-wall?

You are not required to use an in-wall rated cable exclusively within walls; you can use these cables anywhere you normally use regular cables.

The term "in-wall" indicates that the cable meets specific safety standards for installation within walls, such as fire resistance ratings and low smoke emissions when burned. These cables are designed to comply with building codes and safety regulations for permanent installation in walls, ceilings, or other concealed spaces.

Using in-wall cables outside of walls is completely acceptable and can even be beneficial because:

  • They are typically more durable
  • They usually offer better shielding against interference
  • They are often of higher quality overall

However, it's important to note that you should never use cables that are not specifically rated for in-wall use inside walls, as they might not meet fire safety codes and could pose a fire hazard.
