Which type of cable testing device can be used to locate a single cable in a cable bundle?

Cable Tracing: Locating Individual Cables in Bundles

When working with multiple cables bundled together, a Tone Generator and Probe Kit (also known as a tone tracer or toner) is the standard tool for identifying and tracing specific cables without disconnecting them.

How It Works

  1. The tone generator connects to the target cable and sends an audible signal through the wire
  2. The inductive probe detects this signal when placed near the correct cable
  3. When you move the probe along various cables in the bundle, it emits a clear tone only when it passes over the cable connected to the generator.

Applications

This method effectively works for various cable types, including Cat5/Cat6 network cables, telephone lines, coaxial cables, and most non-powered electrical wiring.

Recommended Equipment

For Ethernet/network cable identification specifically, we offer the Professional Tone Generator and Probe Kit (PID 8132), which features:

  • Adjustable tone frequency settings
  • Battery status indicator
  • Compatible with both terminated and unterminated cables
  • Durable construction for field use

This essential troubleshooting tool helps technicians quickly locate specific cables in complex installations, saving significant time during network maintenance or expansion projects.
