How to Connect Toslink Cables

Toslink cables, also known as optical audio cables, are a great way to transmit high-quality digital audio between devices like TVs, soundbars, receivers, and gaming consoles. They use light to carry the signal, which means no electrical interference and crystal-clear sound.

What Does a Toslink Cable Look Like?

Toslink cables have a square-shaped connector with a small lens inside. They often come with a small, clear plastic cap on each end. This cap protects the delicate optical tip during shipping and storage.

Before connecting the cable, make sure to:

  • Remove the plastic caps from both ends
  • Check that the connectors are clean and free of dust

How to Connect a Toslink Cable

  1. Locate the Optical Ports
Look for a port labeled “Optical,” “Digital Audio Out (Optical),” or “Toslink” on your devices. These are usually found on the back of TVs, soundbars, receivers, or game consoles.
  2. Remove the Plastic Caps
Gently pull off the clear plastic caps from both ends of the cable. These must be removed before plugging in the cable.
  3. Align and Insert the Cable
Toslink connectors are keyed, meaning they only fit one way. Line up the shape of the connector with the port and insert it gently until it clicks into place. Do not force it.
  4. Set the Audio Output
On your TV or source device, go into the audio settings and select “Optical” or “Digital Out” as the audio output. You may also need to choose a compatible audio format like PCM or Dolby Digital.

Tips for Best Performance

  • Avoid bending the cable sharply. Toslink cables are sensitive to tight curves and can break internally.
  • Keep the cable ends clean and covered when not in use.
  • Use the shortest length needed to reduce signal loss.

Common Uses

  • Connecting a TV to a soundbar or home theater receiver
  • Linking a Blu-ray player or game console to an AV receiver
  • Sending audio from a streaming box to a speaker system
